2025 Honda CRF450R vs 2025 KTM 350XCF Back to Back: GP Track
Riding my brand new 2025 Honda CRF450R (thanks Honda Marysville Motorsports!) back to back with my 2025 KTM 350XCF on an old school GP track. I had the opportunity to ride the all new 2025 CRF450R last month during the media launch at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana. The track was dug deep and very soft with lots of ruts thanks to sporadic rain throughout the week. I was looking forward to picking up my own 25 CRF450R and riding it at my familiar places to see if the great chassis and suspension and engine impressions I had at the press launch were still here in hard pack choppy conditions. Also I was very curious about how the all new 2025 CRF450R would compare to my 2025 KTM ...

      I like riding wheelies on my Z50 and 110's too! I use power wheelies to give a perspective on power linearity and throttle to rear wheel connectivity. The new Varg software has changed the power character and it is noticeable when trying to do power wheelies (remember the Varg has no clutch).

      The current 23/24 YZ450F is a beast to ride with 2-stroke like throttle response and quick RPM build. The KTM450SXF engine is the easiest to ride 60HP 450F engine out there and the 25 CRF450R is similar though does rev a little quicker.

      The 25 CRF450R still has that classic very responsive to any input chassis character...more calm than previous CRF's but still can be a little busy at speed - easily noticeable when ridden back to back with the KTM. The CRF front fender is slimmer and slopes down more sharply compared to the KTM front fender and along with the small radiator shrouds on CRF gives the CRF the impression (from the saddle) of being smaller.

    Thanks for all the 2025 videos. You posted a video riding either a 23 or 24 CRF Works edition with the ride engineering 23.5 clamps awhile back. Reference stability and front end feel how much different would you say the 2025 450 is compared to that setup. Your reference in this video saying the CRF front end felt "small" took me back to my 2022 CRF 450. I always felt like I was well over the bars with the front wheel under me.

      Yes my buddy has a 2024 CRF450 Works Edition that I rode earlier this summer (I also owned a 23 CRF450WE). The 23.5 Ride Engineering clamps really helped calm the front end down. The 25 CRF450R front end with the stock 22mm offset clamps feels even better. I think the revised rear shock linkage also manages the energy from the rear end of the bike better which also helps calm the front end of the 25 CRF450R. I also feel similar to you about being over the front of the CRF. The front fender on CRF's turns down fairly sharply which gives the front end a shorter and smaller feel from the saddle (I am 6' 2" tall)

    I rode a 25 and honestly feel that people are over stating the new bike. It feels very similar to the old bike. Better for sure but man you ride it back to back with a KTM, KX, or KX and the Honda still doesn't feel as comfortable. First lap I hit a braking bump and the Honda front end pitched downwards really quickly which pitched the rear end up and felt sketchy. I hit that same bump all day on the KTM and even right after and didn't get the same reaction. I want to love the Honda but it's not as good as other bikes on the market for us mortals. 8)

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1 День назад

      The 2025 CRF450R is much more calm up front compared to previous model years but it still has the CRF character of quick responding chassis to any inputs. It also responds well to setting changes - even a click or two is noticeable along with sag and fork height adjustments - all combine and can make the CRF feel more stable or reactive. The latest KTM chassis is a very good combination of stability and cornering.

    Really contemplating getting a 450RX and using it as a single track woods bike? No extra electrical fluff to worry about like the enduro models? Your opinion on that compared to the other 4 4 stroke options?

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1 День назад

      That is a tough question. So many 4-stroke off road bikes! The latest 25 CRF450R engine is the smoothest CRF450 in a while though still responsive. I think the 450RX will be a little better than my R model on the trails. I've ridden the YZ450FX and that engine still revs so quickly and is trickier to control on the trails (even with the power dialed back with the GYTR tuner). I would imagine the Yamah WR450R is a much better trail/woods bike. The KTM 450 engines (especially the 450XCF-W) have smooth power and slower RPM build so a little easier to ride on the trails. Beta 390/430/480 4-strokes have excellent low RPM rideability on the trails. I prefer the Beta Race Edition models as they come with KYB suspension. Lots of choices!

    Can you comment on the amount of engine braking in the honda 250/450 vs ktm 250/450? I was watching a review on the 2025 honda 250 and they mentioned they wished the 250 had less engine braking. It sounds like Honda made quite a bit of progress with this model.

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1 2 дня назад

      The have ridden the 2025 CRF450R a few times now and engine braking has not stood out to me. In fact the engine has a fairly free feel as I back off the throttle in 2nd and 3rd gears. This is a good thing since there is no way to adjust engine braking on the CRF. Engine braking on the 2025 CRF250R I rode did not seem excessive to me. With the Connectivity Unit Offroad on my KTM 350/450 I minimize engine braking - frees up the chassis and makes the bike feel a little more playful.

      Thanks! This new CRF450R is very very good right off the showroom floor. I don't think one is really better - just different characteristics. Does the Honda feel smaller/ more compact than the ktm? Or no

    • @mxengineer1
      @mxengineer1 2 дня назад

      Yes the Honda "feels" smaller from the saddle. The CRF radiator shrouds are smaller and the front fender is less wide and angles down a little more...these combine to give a shorter/smaller front end feel to the CRF. The KTM radiator shrouds go far forward to a point and the front fender is very wide - both combine to give the KTM a longer front end feel. By measurements they might not be that different - just my perception riding them back to back. I plan on moving the CRF handlebar mounts to the forward hole (rotated back) to open up the riding position a little (I am 6'2" tall).
